Fight or Flight:
Queer Birds Series

New works from the "Fight or Flight: Queer Birds" series combine bulletproof Kevlar material with mirrored vinyl in bird-inspired textile objects that embody the choice between staying to fight or seeking refuge. They reference defense mechanisms in nature, the art of drag, and other methods of survival in dangerous times.

Parallel to a rise in queer representation, violence against queer/trans people persists and over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills are introduced annually in the U.S. My textile works question who is valued in our contemporary American society and who has the privilege of being both seen and protected. They reveal the disproportionate challenges faced by queer individuals while celebrating the ubiquity and resilience of queer community.

This work is partially funded by grants from Arts AVL and the Greene Fellowship.
